Peter Wilmshurst is a consultant cardiologist in Stoke-on-Trent. He began scuba diving when he was a medical student. He has been a diving medical referee and member of the BSAC / UK diving medical committees since 1977. He was a member of BSAC National Diving Committee for 10 years.

Full Bio

In the 1970s and 80s he was medical officer on diving expeditions exploring the Red Sea and Barrier Reef of Belsize. He has worked with the navies in a number of countries and advised the Health and Safety Executive since 1994. He was a consultant to NASA at the Johnson Space Center advising on risks of decompression illness in astronauts. He was the first to describe immersion pulmonary oedema in 1981 and the role of right-to-left shunts in decompression illness in 1986.
